Literacy support takes a village — and in London, that village includes educators, parents, and a growing number of volunteers. A recent London Free Press article captures how our Letters, Sounds and Words™ program is helping young students in the London District Catholic School Board (LDCSB) boost their reading skills and confidence.

Launched in four LDCSB elementary schools (including Notre Dame, St. George, St. Jude, and St. Nicholas), the program is already making a measurable difference for Grade 1 students who benefit from extra one-on-one support.

Karen Nemett, an Assistant Superintendent with the LDCSB, emphasized the program’s early success. “We’re seeing increased confidence in students attempting to read independently and a willingness to engage with print material,” she said, adding that students are also showing “positive attitudes towards reading and an expanded vocabulary.”

Andre Kelly, Principal at St. George Catholic Elementary School, called the program an “incredibly effective way to engage students who struggle with reading, building their confidence and skills through targeted support.”

We’re thankful to the London Free Press for spotlighting this important partnership — and to the educators and volunteers helping children build a strong foundation in reading.
